Discovery Channel Refuses to Air "Taxi To The Dark Side"

Taxi to the Dark Side, a documentary about an innocent Afghan taxi driver tortured to death by U.S. officials at Bagram Air Base, has received wide critical acclaim since its debut in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. The New York Times' A.O. Scott said, "If recent American history is ever going to be discussed with the necessary clarity and ethical rigor, this film will be essential."Director Alex Gibney agreed to sell the rights of Taxi to the Discovery Channel because executives convinced him they would "give the film a prominent broadcast." Now, however, Discovery has dropped its plans to air the documentary because the film is too controversial.

Objectivism in Bioshock

Xeni Jardin of BoingBoing writes:

Kotaku has a doozy of a post up today — Yaron Brooks, the president of the Ayn Rand Institute, talking about the use of objectivism in the first-person-shooter game Bioshock.

BioShock may have been conceived as a study in nuance, a place for gamers to discover and explore at their own pace, but its dip into the ethical morass of Ayn Rand's objectivist philosophies has brought her beliefs back into the mainstream spotlight and even piqued the interest of the Ayn Rand Institute's president, Yaron Brook.

Brook, a former member of the Israeli Army military intelligence and award-winning finance professor at Santa Clara University, first took notice of the game when he discovered his 18-year-old son playing it. It's a fact that didn't bother Brook despite his son's objectivist beliefs and the game's not so positive take on the philosophy.

"My son has to find his own way in life," he said. "There are certain games I wouldn't want him to play, like Grand Theft Auto, games that celebrate criminality. But a game that might lead him to think and have him challenge his ideas, I'm fine with. "Luckily for me he doesn't agree with the game, he still seems to believe in objectivism." .

NEW VIDEO: Skateboard-Hating Baltimore Cop Kicks Street Artist’s ‘Moving Box’

New video of Baltimore police officer Salvatore Rivieri in action at the Inner Harbor. This time he confronts Billy Friebele, an artist from Washington D.C., who was videotaping at the Harbor last summer.

Our buddy officer Riviera gets suspended with Pay for his violent outburst. This is the second video of officer badcop.

Friebele said he was taping the reactions of passersby to a box he was moving with a remote controlled car. Officer Rivieri is seen on tape kicking the box off of the car and then kicking the car. The officer then orders Friebele to leave the area.

Rivieri is the same officer caught on a video wrestling a 14 year old skate boarder to the ground. A spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department declined to comment on this latest videotape. Officer Rivieri is suspended without pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation of the incident with the skate boarder

U.S. Will Try to Shoot Down Spy Satellite, Carrying Toxic Fuel, Due to Crash Into the Earth...

Taking a page from Hollywood science fiction, the Pentagon said Thursday it will try to shoot down a dying, bus-size U.S. spy satellite loaded with toxic fuel on a collision course with the Earth. The military hopes to smash the satellite as soon as next week &mdash just before it enters Earth's atmosphere - with a single missile fired from a Navy cruiser in the northern Pacific Ocean. The dramatic maneuver may well trigger international concerns, and U.S. officials have begun notifying other countries of the plan - stressing that it does not signal the start of a new American anti-satellite weapons program.Military and administration officials said the satellite is carrying fuel called hydrazine that could injure or even kill people who are near it when it hits the ground. That reason alone, they said, persuaded President Bush to order the shoot-down.

1878 Military Law Gets New Attention

This bit of relative antiquity defines the role of the US Military in our lives and keeps us from becoming little more than a wealthy banana republic.

Currently, America's military is largely prohibited from acting as a domestic police force. And while the presence of military "advisors" during the siege, brutality and slaughter at WACO Texas set ominous trends in motion, few thought in terms of its implications. But that was before the terrorism of September 11, 2001, now glibly called "911."

"Our way of life has forever changed,'' wrote Sen. John Warner R-Va., in an October 2001 letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "Should this law [Posse Comitatus Act] now be changed to enable our active-duty military to more fully join other domestic assets in this war against terrorism?''

The law, was championed by far-sighted Southern lawmakers in 1878. They had experienced a fifteen year military occupation by the US Army in post-Civil War law enforcement. They understood the heel of a jackboot.

In a nutshell, this act bans the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines from participating in arrests, searches, seizure of evidence and other police-type activity on U.S. soil. The Coast Guard and National Guard troops under the control of state governors are excluded from the act.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, testifying in October before the Senate Armed Services Committee, agreed that it might be desirable to give federal troops more of a role in domestic policing to prevent terrorism. "In certain cases we can do more than anyone else in the country because of the special capabilities that we have,'' he said.

Dennis Corrigan, a retired colonel who taught the law at the Army's Judge Advocate General's school, says legislators should resist the urge to change it. The military isn't trained to be a police force, he says, so it should stick to the skills for which it is trained: surveillance, information gathering, logistical support. All of these activities are allowable under Posse Comitatus. "I'm not sure, even with what's going on today, that Congress wants the military arresting people.''

But Michael Spak, former Army JAG colonel now teaching at Chicago-Kent College of Law had another spin. "It's good for the law to tell the truth and for everybody to follow the law,'' he said. "But is it necessary? No.''

Many American politicians and bureaucrats hold what might be called a "Consumerist" interpretation of freedom. In a nation where liberty is defined by the ability to choose from a variety of breakfast cereals, it may not be long before the supermarket cash register will be nicknamed "Checkpoint Charlie."

West Wing Aides Cited for Contempt

The Washington Post's Paul Kane reports the U.S. House of Representatives has voted 223 to 32 to issue contempt citations against White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and White House counsel Harriet Miers in the year-long case about fired U.S. attorneys in the Department of Justice. Bolten and Miers claim the DoJ advised them that President Bush was within his rights to exempt them from testimony due to executive privilege. In retaliation, House Democrats hope the House general counsel will pursue a civil lawsuit to compel their testimony. In counter-retaliation, House Republicans have tried to stop the legislation from being passed, and have pushed for limited testimony only by Bush Administration officials.

Running Scared - House Republicans walk out over spying bill

They bailed so they didnt have to go through the legal procces. Nothing new argue contempt by walking out and displaying contempt. The republicans are on the run, ducking, dodging, and trying to escape all responsibility.

CNN) — House Republicans staged a walkout Thursday afternoon to protest the Democratic leadership's decision to vote on a contempt motion citing White House Chief Of Staff Josh Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers.

The two have refused to comply with subpoenas in an investigation into the firings of U.S. attorneys in 2006. The Republicans think the House should be focused on passing an extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Rep. Adam Putnam, R-Florida, said Democrats are "more interested in a political witch hunt" than protecting the country.

The surveillance bill expires over the weekend. Republicans and Democrats in the House are hung up over a provision in the legislation that would grant telecommunication companies retroactive immunity for the help they provided to the Bush administration in investigating terrorism after the September 11 attacks.

Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten in Contempt of Congress

Congressman Wexler calls for Contempt on the House Floor Marked as: Mature
In a vote on the House floor, we acted to enforce the law and our Constitution, and hold former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten in Contempt of Congress.

Bolten and Miers have ignored congressional subpoenas for nine months and thumbed their noses at Congress and the American people.

Executive privilege has never permitted officials to avoid appearing altogether when subpoenaed. This behavior is unprecedented and outrageous.

Now, these two renegade officials must face up to their blatant disregard of the law and constitution.

Our message of accountability for Bush/Cheney is finally resonating on Capitol Hill.

Judiciary Chairman John Conyers fought hard to bring this to a vote, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi herself took the floor to support contempt.

While Democrats may not all agree on how to press this Administration, one thing is clear:

Today, Congress has asserted its rights under the Constitution.

We must not back down.

We must never cede the rights of the Congress to the Executive.

I am pleased to inform you that today's legislation allows Congress to bypass the Attorney General (who has stated to me this week that he would not enforce contempt) and immediately take action in the courts.

Today, Congress finally defended the Constitution and our rights as an equal branch of government.

Yours truly,

Congressman Robert Wexler

Protest To Keep Recruiters Out Of Schools

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Under the watchful eyes of police in riot gear, hundreds of demonstrators representing a wide array of protest groups on both sides of the Iraq War debate Tuesday traded angry taunts and verbal threats, but their tense interactions fell short of physical violence in anticipation for controversial Berkeley City Council vote over Marine recruiting.

The Berkeley City Council drew a deluge of criticism after voting two weeks ago to send a letter to a downtown recruiting station advising the Marines they would be considered "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" if they did not move out.

On Tuesday night, the council was considering a second resolution put forward by two council members that would rescind the letter and differentiate between opposing the war in Iraq and "our respect and support for those serving in the armed forces." The meeting followed a daylong rally by both sides outside City Hall.

"This is very personal," said Lonnie Piet, of Sacramento, who joined the pro-troop organization Move America Forward outside City Hall hours before the scheduled vote. Piet, whose son is a Marine, said he wants a personal apology from council members and anti-war group Code Pink.

"The Marines have the right to recruit anyone, anywhere," Piet said.

The police emerged from a low-key presence early in the day and came out in force by the afternoon hours as groups as diverse as Code Pink, the Gold Star Moms and Move America Forward America escalated the rhetoric and shouts.

Move America Forward demonstrators waved flags and held signs including "Boycott Berkeley for Bashing Our Boys" and "Support our Troops."

On the other side, protesters with Code Pink held bouquets of flowers and waved signs saying "Peace Now" and "Bring Our Troops Home."

"We want to ask the Marines to not recruit in our community. The majority of citizens here are fervently against the war," said Code Pink protester Cynthia Papermaster, who has lived in Berkeley since 1965. "We're not against the Marines, but against what they're recruited to do."

Police made a handful of arrests for minor scuffles between the protesters, said Berkeley police spokesman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

The recruiting office opened in Berkeley in late 2006. It operated quietly until four months ago when Code Pink began holding regular protests.

The City Council's initial vote Jan. 29 outraged several lawmakers, who have threatened to withhold millions in state and federal money destined for Berkeley.

On Tuesday, more than 40 House Republican members asked President Bush to immediately rescind over $2 million in earmarks awarded to Berkeley.

The military does not "selectively defend our country, its people, or our freedom," the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Bush. "Therefore, we should not reward jurisdictions that selectively support our troops."

DHS Warns Of Pregnant Prosthetic Belly Bombings

New Wave Of Terrorism Carried Out By Women Wearing Loaded Pregnant Suits
Reporting Sean Hennessey WASHINGTON (CBS) ― The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are warning against a new type of terrorism carried out by women who appear to be pregnant.

It may be the newest wave in suicide attacks: a prosthetic pregnant belly serving as a compartment for explosives. The belly opens up from the front and the explosives are placed inside.

"It's not the first time we've had women involved before in one way or another," says security expert Robert Strang.

Strang tells CBS 2 he isn't surprised at the new lows terrorists will stoop to -- lows that include those with Down syndrome even carrying out suicide attacks in Baghdad.

"They're recruiting anybody they can get to do those things that's not going to inform law enforcement, that's not going to be a threat to these organizations that can get the job done," says Strang.

With terrorist training camps up and running in Pakistan, there are now fears Americans might one day be involved. Authorities are increasingly worried that Al Qaeda is actively recruiting people who look like Americans and sound like Americans to carry out the next attack on America.

"Whether it's Americans or whether it's people who can launch from Europe, because they have visas or passports that allow them to travel to the United States, they are looking at people who can operate in the west," says Philip Mudd of the FBI.

Authorities say there is "no specific, credible intelligence" that says terrorists are planning to use women and suicide bombers to attack, but the warning was sent to agencies across the country in the wake of recent attacks overseas.

Does Facebook Own You Forever?

In a recent feature article on Facebook and the "new privacy," I stressed how the company's invasive data policy seizes lots of information from users, even after they quit the site:

Even if users terminate their membership, pictures of them posted by others remain online. But users can't really quit, anyway. Like guests at the Hotel California, people who check out of Facebook have a hard time leaving. Profiles of former members are preserved in case people want to reactivate their accounts. And all users' digital selves can outlive their creators. As the company's "terms of use" explain, profiles of deceased members are kept "active under a special memorialized status for a period of time determined by us to allow other users to post and view comments."

The issue has generally received far less media scrutiny than user revolts over programs that spread people's information, such as the "feed" controversy and protests against "social ads," though bloggers and social media observers have flagged this problem before. DavidNYC posted one of the more memorable pleas in December, "Delete My Bleeping Account, Facebook!"

Today the New York Times weighs in, with an excellent article by Maria Aspan:

Ron Paul won't back McCain

This is a CNN article acting like Dr. Paul has dropped out. Why would someone sponsor their rival? Unless your implying Paul isn't running.

John McCain is lining up quite a few major endorsements now that he’s the GOP’s likely nominee — but at least one Republican said Monday he won’t be backing the Arizona senator.

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Ron Paul said he'd only support McCain for president if the Arizona senator "has a lot of change of heart" on his Iraq war stands.

“I can not support anybody with the foreign policy he advocates — you know, perpetual war…I think it’s un-American, unconstitutional, immoral, and not Republican," Paul said.

The comments come two days after the Texas congressman definitely ruled out running as a third party candidate, and said he was phasing back his presidential bid to focus on his home district and the re-election race he faces.

"If I were to lose the primary for my congressional seat, all our opponents would react with glee, and pretend it was a rejection of our ideas. I cannot and will not let that happen," Paul wrote on his Web site Saturday.

Paul also acknowledged he was cutting back his presidential campaign staff, but said he will not formally bow out of the race before the convention
